Los Calleperros

Above, Blanca and friends. Blanca is the leader dog, the alpha female.
Gordo, the dog who owns this calle. A big loveable lug.
Nanu, the shy one but loves to be hugged and have his belly rubbed. He has not allowed me to cut his hair yet.
Macha, the lover. She loves to have her hair combed. She adores all people and the people on her calle tend to watch out for her.
Ohos Bello, his eyes are very blue-grey, kind of like a husky. He is the second in command and loves to grab my wrist in his mouth and try to drag me around. An all around nice guy.
Bucanir, the clown. Loves attention and lots of it.

These are pictures of some of the street dogs I have become friends with. They are called Callejeros. But since homeless people are also called callejeros, I am renaming these pooches as calleperros. San Jaoquin has about 5,000 people and I estimate that there are at least 500 calleperros here. None seem to be mean but many are very frightened, some are aloof and others are regular goofballs. I bought a brush and scissors and have been busy combing and cutting huge thistles out of long-haired dogs´coats. They seem to appreciate it.

Hi Mimi,
Did you name the dogs and if not, how did they get their names? They are lucky to have you come along and show them some affection and cut out the burs and comb them!! What do they eat? They don't look like they are starving at all. Hope the espanol is coming!! Take care and love you!

I named Gordo but the others already had names. The people living on the calle that the dogs live on gave them names. I see people throw comida out on the sidewalks for them to eat and they go through garbage a lot. These dogs look pretty healthy as do many others. Unfortunately, there are some that look pretty scraggly.
